A war of movement, a state under construction

For seventeen years, resistance rested not only on a war of movement but also on institutions: territorial administration, a Diwan, courts, taxation, a regular army, arms workshops, coinage and diplomacy. Under mounting military pressure, the Smala, the Emir’s itinerant capital, became at once a command centre, a mobile political seat, a place of life and a camp.

The Book of Halts

In Damascus he devoted himself to meditation, teaching and writing. In the Kitab al Mawaqif he developed a thought deeply nourished by Ibn Arabi: a metaphysics of unity, an ethics of compassion and meditation on signs. His political trajectory thus continued in another register of intellectual and spiritual responsibility.

In July 1860 he placed his moral authority and Algerian network in Damascus at the service of those under threat, opening his residences and organising refuges for Christian civilians. The act gave a universal humanitarian dimension to a life that had begun in resistance and sovereignty.

Two political dimensions of the Emir’s trajectory: building institutions through resistance, then examining how authority is exercised in practice.

Thinking the state

Military resistance was accompanied by institutional construction: territorial administration, Diwan, justice, taxation, a regular army, currency, chancery and diplomacy. The Smala gave this construction a mobile form: the Emir’s itinerant capital, combining a political seat, command centre and organisation of collective life.

Resistance was not enough. Institutions had to be built.

An ethics of responsibility

His trajectory invites us to consider authority as more than force: keeping one’s word, negotiation, justice and responsibility in war. This does not mean deriving every political decision from spirituality, but observing where these dimensions may meet.

When order collapses

What can authority do when it refuses to reduce itself to force?

When violence spread through Damascus, Abdelkader mobilised members of his Algerian entourage, opened his houses and organised the protection of Christian civilians. Here, inheritance is read less in a slogan than in conduct: putting authority and means at the service of people under threat.

Kitab al Mawaqif

After action, defeat, captivity and Damascus, experience becomes writing.

The Mawaqif do not sum up his entire trajectory. They offer one of its inner outcomes: inherited tradition becomes experience thought through, contemplated and transmitted.

This chapter remains centred on a documented spiritual legacy: Qadiriyya formation, transmissions, the intellectual and spiritual horizon of Ibn ʿArabi, and the Mawaqif. Historical facts are distinguished from their editorial interpretation.
