Amboise, captivity, bereavement and reconstruction

The Château royal d’Amboise dates the presence of the Emir, his family and his retinue from November 1848 to 16 October 1852. The institution also documents the deaths that marked this period and their remembrance in the Garden of the Orient.

A collective captivity

Reducing Amboise to the Emir alone would obscure his family, retinue and the twenty-five people now commemorated by the Garden of the Orient. The dossier therefore restores the human and collective dimension of captivity.

From confinement to relationship

The institutional source describes difficult initial conditions, followed by gradually developing relations with the people of Amboise. This evolution erases neither constraint nor bereavement, but it illuminates the reconstruction of presence in exile.
